Inspiring Chemistry Lecture at The Purbeck School

Our Year 11 GCSE and Year 12 and 13 A Level Chemistry students recently had the privilege of attending a fascinating lecture by Professor Matthew Almond titled “What’s It Made Of?”.
During the hour-long session, Professor Almond explored a range of instrumental analysis techniques, including chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. These complex methods were brought to life through real-world applications such as drug testing in sport, detecting titanium dioxide in food, pesticide analysis, and even the chemistry of interstellar space.
The talk provided students with a unique insight into how chemistry underpins everyday life and cutting-edge research. It was an inspiring experience that highlighted the importance of analytical techniques in solving real-world problems and advancing scientific understanding.
We are grateful to Professor Almond for sharing his expertise and sparking curiosity among our budding scientists.
