The Charlotte Hosker Scholarship Trust was established in memory of Charlotte Hosker, who tragically died from meningitis at the age of just 12 years. Charlotte was a young person with hopes, dreams and ambitions for the future, but she never had the opportunity to fulfil them. In her memory, the Trust was created to help other young people realise their potential, achieve their ambitions and pursue opportunities that might otherwise be beyond their reach. The Charlotte Hosker Scholarship Trust has a particular focus on encouraging and supporting female students who aspire to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – the STEM subjects. These fields are vital to our future and offer exciting opportunities for innovation, discovery and problem-solving.

What an amazing day at Thorpe Park for our 263 Year 9 and Year 10 students! Glorious (although slightly too hot!) sunshine and soaring temperatures, students made the most of every moment, enjoying the park's thrilling rides, attractions, and fantastic atmosphere. From adrenaline-filled roller-coasters to spending time with friends, it was an epic day filled with excitement, laughter, and unforgettable memories. The students represented the school brilliantly throughout the trip, and despite the heat, their energy and enthusiasm never wavered. A truly amazing day!

After having some free time to explore the Hardy exhibition and other areas of the museum, we headed to Hardy’s birthplace in Higher Bockhampton, learning about his origins and family whilst standing in beautiful surroundings. After a pit stop at McHardy’s restaurant, the group headed to our final location, which was Max Gate, a grand and unusual house which Hardy had built as a space to work, surrounded by trees, a druid stone, and his pet cemetery.

This is a charity that has been providing enrichment days for schools/colleges to go and learn about the Primates in regard to many respects.

It would seem it involves a lot of cleaning and food preparation with monkeys being fed up to 8 times a day. The second talk was about the different types of communication primates use. There were a surprising number of different types of calls. Some of them were rather interesting and some very comical. It certainly kept the students interested and many went home and talked extensively about it to their parents. So a thoroughly worthwhile experience.

Interspersed throughout the day, we were also fortunate enough to make some enrichment toys for the Primates. These ranged from preparing piñatas and then filling ones that a previous group had made with tasty snacks. We also had the opportunity to make willow snack baskets for Capuchin monkeys and Gibbons. Finally, we put together a multitude of lush boxes and cable tied these together once filled with treats for the Chimps and other primates.

Pupils had the opportunity to meet and quiz female engineers from the RNLI, who discussed the different roles they play in saving lives at sea. Alongside these RNLI engineers students were given many innovation engineering challenges and taken on a tour of the All-weather Lifeboat Centre where the RNLI builds and maintains its state-of-the-art 25 knot all-weather lifeboats.

I am writing to inform you that, due to the weather forecast for next week, we will be moving to a summer uniform arrangement.

Next week is expected to be exceptionally hot, with temperatures forecast to be around 30°C for the majority of the week. With this in mind, we have decided that students will be permitted to adapt their uniform to ensure they remain comfortable in these conditions. We will implement this change for at least one week and will keep the situation under review.

Students may adapt their uniform in the following ways:

1. Standard Uniform (Adapted):

Students may continue to wear the normal school uniform; however, they will not be expected to wear a tie or blazer, nor are they required to bring these items into school.

2. PE Kit Option:

Students may choose to wear their school PE kit instead. This includes:

The Purbeck School logo T-shirt (black with red trim)

Black shorts, or black leggings, or black tracksuit bottoms, or black skorts

(Please ensure all items are appropriate in length and fit. If clothing is deemed unsuitable, students will be required to change back into school uniform.)

Trainers

We hope that these adjustments will help provide a more comfortable learning environment for all students during the period of hot weather.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely,

This event allowed the boys to explore what it means today to be a young male in society whilst developing public speaking skills to present to the group.

The boys started the day meeting with World Champion Boxer Chris Billam-Smith who spoke about his life as a boxer and what it means to be a man today. Chris is known as “The Gentleman” on the boxing circuit and instils respect and dignity in and out of the ring, throughout all aspect’s of his life. The boys then participated in public speaking workshops facilitated by The Speakers Trust.

They openly discussed topics about their likes, school life, social media today and their proudest moments. They participated in games and gave speeches where their confidence and voices grew throughout the day.

In March and April, our year 10 GCSE geographers attended two days of compulsory fieldwork days: a human geography day to Bournemouth and a physical geography day to Hengistbury Head. The purpose was to attempt a variety of data collection techniques and obtain evidence and information to answer an overall question for each day. All GCSE geography students have questions in two exams at the end of year 11 based on their two days of fieldwork.

One of our geographers, James, writes: “We went around Bournemouth, taking data from a range of tests we did. We learnt about the land use of Bournemouth and how it influences tourists and locals of the area. We ended the day at the pier where we asked members of the public about the area and if it caters for locals or tourists. It was an amazing day that gave us a wide understanding of the area.”

At Hengistbury Head, the students completed methods such as beach profiles, sediment analysis, longshore drift measurements and recorded wave conditions. We were lucky to have a sunny day and a lunch stop near the expensive beach huts.

Both days the geographers showed excellent effort and collaborative teamwork to complete all methods. We were pleased to be informed by members of the public how well the students presented themselves and represented the school in Bournemouth. Well done all the geographers!

Despite typically poor weather conditions, spirits remained high and students demonstrated excellent resilience and positivity throughout.

The group also extended their investigations into the wider Purbeck area, comparing rural and urban environments and deepening their understanding of spatial contrasts within the landscape. It was an excellent day all round, with students engaging enthusiastically and making the most of the hands-on learning opportunities.

Congratulations to sixth form student Dani Tatchell-Stannard, who achieved an outstanding milestone this weekend while representing AFC Bournemouth in the prestigious FA Women’s National League Reserve Cup.

The competition, which runs throughout the season, brings together reserve teams from across the UK, providing a highly competitive platform for emerging talent in the women’s game. It plays a crucial role in player development, giving young athletes the opportunity to perform at a national level while bridging the gap between youth and senior football.

After an impressive campaign marked by consistency, teamwork, and determination, AFC Bournemouth progressed through the rounds to reach the final. The showpiece event took place at St George’s Park—the home of England’s national teams and a venue synonymous with elite football development.

Bournemouth secured victory to lift the trophy, crowning them champions of the national competition. Dani’s involvement in such a successful squad highlights both her dedication and not only reflects her individual talent but also the strength of pathways within women’s football in England. With the continued growth of the sport and increased visibility at all levels, competitions like the Reserve Cup are becoming ever more important in shaping the future of the game.

Well done to Dani and the entire AFC Bournemouth team on this fantastic achievement—an inspiring success story and a proud moment for the school community.

A group of talented female Year 12 mathematicians recently took part in an inspiring Maths Enrichment Day at University of Southampton, designed to challenge and extend their understanding beyond the classroom.

The event brought together students from across the region to explore a range of advanced mathematical topics, offering a taste of university-level study. Throughout the day, participants engaged in interactive lectures and problem-solving workshops led by experienced academics, covering areas such as cryptography, mathematical modelling, and real-world applications of pure mathematics.

Students were encouraged to think creatively and collaboratively, tackling complex problems and developing strategies that required both logical reasoning and innovation. The sessions not only deepened their subject knowledge but also highlighted the diverse pathways and careers that mathematics can lead to.

We are lucky to have the support of the Charlotte Hosker Scholarship Trust who sponsored our attendance to this event, enabling the trip to be free of charge to our students. Events like this play an important role in supporting young women pursuing STEM subjects, helping to build confidence and ambition in a field where female representation continues to grow.

The group returned motivated and inspired, having gained new skills and perspectives that will support them in their A-level studies and beyond.

Purple Up Day is a national awareness initiative that recognises and celebrates children from Armed Forces families. These children often experience unique challenges, such as parental deployment, frequent moves, and transitions between schools.

The day provides an opportunity for schools to acknowledge their resilience and to show visible support for Service children within our community.

To mark Purple Up Day, students are invited to wear a small item of purple alongside their normal school uniform on Friday 24 April. This may include, for example, a purple jumper, ribbon, socks, or other subtle accessory. There is no expectation for full non-uniform, and participation is optional.

The audience was treated to an outstanding variety of performances, including heartfelt ballads, beautiful classical pieces, and incredible renditions of Metallica and Nirvana. The range and quality of music on display were truly second to none.

Every student performed magnificently in front of an audience of more than 250 people, demonstrating confidence, passion, and dedication. It was a fabulous evening from start to finish, and we could not be prouder of everyone who stepped onto the stage.

A huge thank you to all who came along to support the event. Thanks to your generosity, the showcase raised over £800 for the Music Department — an amazing achievement!

Finally, an extra‑special thank you goes to the wonderful Mr Burns for organising this memorable evening. His hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment made the event the success it was.

Well done to all involved — we can’t wait for the next showcase! 🎶 more photos to follow after Easter!

Panic stations throughout the day, as the girls had three people off ill, so super subs were called in, however, the girls still had one player down, and went to the league with six instead of seven. This did not deter them, they started the first game, and drew three all against Parkstone, considering this is a new set up, and they were missing a wing defence, I think this game was a period of adjustment. After this, they had their game faces on, and got into their rhythm, then there was no stopping them! As always Ida marks tight, makes lots of interceptions which turns the game around. Lily was using her height, was marking well and got her hands to many ball, making it difficult for attacking teams to get the ball in the circle. Ava at goal defence, which is not her usual position, adapted and played really well. Neveah, again out of position, continue to do beautiful terms in the air, read the feed into the circle perfectly, and continue to put beautiful balls into the shooters. It is really pleasing to see Natasha and Leah start to reach their potential. They are reading each other space, doing little passes to get closer to the circle, and they’re shooting was spot-on, very impressive! As a result, the next three games, the girls were undefeated. Player of the match went to Lia.

A group of year 7s and year 13s spent a day at We the Curious in Bristol. This is a hands-on centre for science, offering a range of workshop and lab-based activities, as well as exhibition space.

The year 7s took part in a Climate Change workshop, a card-based game where each group had to find ways of boosting the economy of their country while ensuring biodiversity was maintained. We reached the point of no return several times, thankfully being able to start again to put right our wrongs!

Owen said, ‘This was my favourite part of the day as I liked being in charge of a country’.

They also visited the Planetarium. Isaac and Reuben said, ‘It was so cool seeing all the planets through the 3D goggles’.

The rest of the day was spent exploring the two exhibition floors; creating Aardman style animations, powering the water wheel to create sand from rock, and experimenting with green screen technology amongst a host of other activities.

Year 13 spent the day in a lab-based workshop. An unusual human trait was explored through DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis. Using these methods students identified if they had the form of the gene to enable them to taste the bitter chemical PTC. The broader social, medical and ethical implications of gene technology were also debated.

It was a long day out but packed with stimulating educational opportunity.

This guide explores how Bluetooth trackers like AirTags and SmartTags can be misused for stalking, bullying and invading young people’s privacy.

Tracking devices like AirTags and SmartTags were designed to help people find lost belongings, but they’ve also opened the door to worrying forms of misuse. Their compact size and subtle design make them easy to hide, which can lead to the unwanted tracking of people without their knowledge. From stalking and bullying to potential misuse by peers, these gadgets bring a range of risks that trusted adults must stay aware of.

This guide examines the growing popularity of Bluetooth trackers, the most common ways they’re being misused, and how to spot signs that a child may be affected. With practical tips on detecting hidden devices, using the right apps, and starting important conversations, it’s a vital read for parents, carers and educators looking to stay ahead of a fast-moving issue.

This week, as part of National Careers Week, we were delighted to welcome a range of guest speakers to our school, including ex-students. Our visitors included Peter Russell (Project Engineer), Flo Whiting (Upcoming Stonemason Apprentice), Abi Parker (Marine Microbiologist), Emily Watt (Planning Consultant), Max Burridge (Royal Marine Reservist), and representatives from Bath University.

Students had the opportunity to hear about the speaker’s journey from their time at school to their current career. Student’s learned that it’s perfectly normal if you do not have a clear plan for the future and that many career pathways include twists and turns. The key messages shared were to dream big, develop strong values, put yourself forward for opportunities and pursue your interests with confidence.

We are very thankful for the support given by the wider community, to make this an engaging and motivating week, helping students to explore the wide range of opportunities available to them in the future.

With reading for pleasure in decline, this practical guide offers ten thoughtful ways to reignite children’s enthusiasm for books. From valuing all forms of reading to broadening access to diverse materials, it explores how adults can nurture positive reading habits both at home and in school. Digital tools, audiobooks and augmented reality are also considered as engaging ways to support today’s readers.

It also highlights the power of social connection – recommending books, reading together and meeting authors – alongside the importance of modelling reading ourselves. With expert insight from literacy specialist Carl Pattison, this edition provides supportive, achievable ideas to help young people reconnect with reading and see it as a meaningful part of everyday life.
